In Response To: Re: M1A1 hi-res textures (Blake37)

: Wait, I'm confused here. JPGs, while (much) smaller, take longer to load in
: A1?

That is correct, because they have to be decompressed, which is slow. Video cards are not fast enough to decompress JPEG in real time, so Aleph One has to decompress them when it loads them. So, what you end up with in memory (before it goes to the card) is the same. The in-game load times are the same for PNG and JPEG, but the progress bar before hand will take noticeably longer with JPEG.

Some (nvidia) video cards support paletted textures, which, if Aleph One supported them, would let paletted PNGs load (in-game) 4x as fast as JPEGs...but A1 does not support that OpenGL extension.

There are many replacement texture improvements in the pipeline, and when they are done I'll be putting together an Aleph One replacement texture guide that explains which formats are better and why.
