For the latter, what I was was people writing in to the MSP pointing out all the similarities between the two. I don't remember when HL was released but look back around that date on the MSP news page and you'll probably see the Mara fan comments about the similarities.
As to the HL dev team citing Marathon as inspiration, I may have hallucinated that and if not, I certainly don't remember where I saw it. I've always been bad at bibliographies.
