No actually, Half-Life was just a ripoff of Marathon.
I think someone on the HL dev team admitted to Marathon as a source of inspiration once, and when it first came out Marathon fans were all like OMG it's totally like a new Marathon game!!!
So, Halo is really a ripoff of Marathon, but we all knew that already... and it's hard to rip oneself off, anyway.
