Last time we had a show of hands, M2 was the favorite by around a 2:1 margin. Also, Fileball conducted a poll of all Marathon scenarios, original and 3rd party. M2 came out the clear favorite there as well.

I will agree that there are some things about M1 that are superior and M1 was, after all, truly ground breaking. In terms of gameplay, variety, eye candy and plot, M2 is extraordinary. M1's maps are by necessity smaller and, as someone put it here many years ago, what kind of chemical dependency freak designed the Marathon? M1 was a great game, but the levels were rather contrived compared to M2 and Infinity. M1 was the first and it will always hold a special place in my heart, but M2 was much more sophisticated. It was more polished. Bungie really came of age with M2.
