NEVER forget System Shock ;-)
Even with the hideous control scheme, the original SS was a pretty amazing game. Really great story, tons of depth (there are what, 5,000 weapons, drugs, implants and other usable items in that game?), and pretty good action. Way ahead of its time.
And System Shock 2 is the only game I'll consistently mention in the same breath as Marathon when talking story and atmosphere.
