Nah. You just have not yet realized your full potential.
After you play the game for a while, you should be able to take on thirty purple S'pht while blindfolded, sitting backwards in your chair, using only your psychic powers to control the computer. Some people say keyboard only is the way to go, but we all know that real Vidmasters don't even need that.
Of course, fists only, total carnage, rechargers are for pansies, so on and so forth.
On a /much/ more serious note, yes, Marathon (and its many compilers) are hard, but it can only get easier. Someday you'll have a revelation and suddenly everything about the game's mechanics will become clear to you. Or you'll be able to dodge rockets by running...towards?...them?. Or you'll make the environment hit itself each time it fires. Or you'll be able to weave between projectiles. Again, so on and so forth.
Practice! Never stop running, never stop firing. :)
