In Response To: OMG guys, watcha doing!?!? (goran)

: This is to levinson and adam, and probably everybody who thinks the same way.
: I'm so against you (no offense intended).

: You want marathon be a 3d game like quake, you want fog, awesome graphics,
: why don't you go and play unreal or something.

My interest is not in all the fancy 3D graphics - it's in being sure that I can play Marathon for another 10 years, and beyond. Simple analogy - Think you can open a document created 10 years ago with a computer bought this year? Think again. Think your computer could run the same softward that created that document 10 years ago? Probably not. Think Word 2004 can open a document created by Word 1.0? Nope. The reason - the only reason I want to see Marathon and all its sequels and 3rd party offspring ported to a more modern platform is so that they will be playable for the coming decade, after which the process will probably need to be repeated. Lets just say I'm a bit less optimistic that AO will be upgraded as OS XI, XII and XIII come out. Ditto for Win - whatever follows. If importing Marathon to a newer engine allows mapmakers to add new features, great, but that's not the primary reason why I want to see this done. From a programming standpoint, writing a map editor is a lot easier than writing a game engine. Being able to import Marathon maps into a new engine will be challenging - I'll acknowlege that - but probably still more worthwhile than trying to continually update an outdated engine. Please don't get me wrong - I'm greatful for Loren Petrich and all the open source guys working on AO, I just feel and have always felt (read my posts from 2 years ago) that adding new features to AO is not the top priority. That need would be better addressed by moving on to a completely new code base.
