Matt, I have been playing around with Canyon the last hour or so. It seems to me there really is a "too many objects" problem with the level. I created a new map consisting of just Canyon and then removed most of the enemies in the room to the east (no particular reason why I chose that room) of where you begin the level. I left exactly 14 enemies in that room. I removed no other objects anywhere in the map. The level then played fine on Total Carnage.
