In Response To: Re: PF Volunteers - To Cross the Canyon (Dr. John Sumner)

: Actually, I rather liked the level. There are plenty of Pattern Buffers and
: rechargers scattered about. Plus the enemies cannot open the doors that
: separate adjacent rooms. That helps protect the player quite a bit. If
: Matt and Andrew can figure out what is causing the major problems plaguing
: the level, I hope they keep it.

We will keep it, I can't imagine trashing a level--though it obviously needs some work.

: To add to the mystery, let me also offer this strange incident. Just for the
: challenge, I have been trying to vid all of these levels. However, on this
: particular level, I have been unable to get the level to even begin
: properly under vidmaster rules. Most of the time, when I start the level
: from Cmd-Option-Begin-New-Game, my opening position is OUTSIDE the box
: where the player is supposed to begin the level, and I am facing the
: single Trooper. Twice (for some weird reason) I actually started in the
: previous level Minnow, even though I KNOW I entered the level number for
: Canyon.

Now that you mention it, I think I may have had this problem too when trying to start at this level. I can think of one thing that it might be without having all hte resources at my fingertips: too many objects (monsters). I'm not entirely convinced that this is the problem, but if the marathon engine changes which monsters are present depending on difficulty AND a random seed, then sometimes the monster count could be ok and the level play normally, but othertimes there could be too many monster objects, causing the game to choke or die. If there are too many monsters, that could explain why it dumps you in minnow. Hmmm, I'll have to think about this one...

Andy, let me know if you read this and what you can figure out!
