In Response To: RED 1.1: Tastes Like Evil (Mark Levin)

: This level is extremely difficult, contains one of the most difficult puzzles
: in the scenario, and several bugs.

This is an insanely difficult level on DW. I lost track of the number of attempts I made before I made it past the first part, until I reached the first (or rather second) PB.

: Remove infinite regeneration of beetles (the effect can be simulated with
: new ambushes being released by triggers. This will make it impossible to
: lock down monsters on the level with the AI limit.

Actually, I wish I'd known about that trick ;^)

OK, I agree with this, but you need to start even sooner, in the room where you first teleport in - those beetles are infinitely regenerating, too. It is very difficult to leave this room with shields intact - slowing down the pace would definitely help.

: Place a pattern buffer right before the entrance to the blood run. Since I
: now know about the switch over the blood pool, and with the need to repeat
: the entire level on failure removed, I don't think the puzzle needs any
: more changes. Although, perhaps we could make the switch more obvious
: (flashing or something).

I still think this is too little too late. I would suggest placing the PB not at the entrance to the blood run but burried in the first red tunnel area. Also I would zone the red tunnel area off so that it could serve as a true safe haven for the player. It tends to be relatively safe, but monsters will follow you in. Further, I wouldn't mind if there were a secret shield recharger (or rather armour repolymerizer) hidden somewhere in this network. I feel rather strongly that the player needs a safe haven. True, there are areas that are relatively safe once cleared of monsters, but I think the player needs this right away.

The fusion mace is amazingly effective on this level and even though the player encounters a couple of opportunities to pick on up before now, they can be easily missed. We might want to consider adding another one to this level somewhere, but in an out of the way location.
