I like the theory about alternate timeline - every time you die, that actually happened in an alternate timeline, and at the point where you used the Pattern Buffer, there was a fork in the timeline and the "real" universe took the other way, where you ultimately survived. The reason other people don't do it is that they are only humans, and probably they don't remember any of what happened after the fork, when (if?) they return to it. We however are Destiny, of course we can travel back and forth in alternate timelines =)
