This is a good time to explore Ian's ship in detail. You'll be back, and under considerably more hostile circumstances, so this is a great time to explore alternate routes to reach the bridge. Too bad that Ian didn't stash any hidden goddies, however. One thing you may want to do with an expendable saved game is to try shooting some of the bobs - you'll activate the ship's built-in defences, helping you to identify them later, when they'll definitely be shooting at you.
