Yikes - sounds like you're an import from the PC world. Preference files are stored in the Preferences folder inside the System Folder on your hard drive. Only PC's and a few cloned PC apps on the Mac put their prefs in the application folder. But this is not your problem!

This is one of the oldest bugs around, and it should have never made it onto the MAS - it was even on the Trilogy CD. There is a corrupted map file in the Forge Tutorial on the CD. Copy the CD to your hard drive and trash the Forge tutorial map files, and you'll be fine. BTW, this happened to me, too, way back when.
