|Bungie Fanfest Update #1|
|Posted By: Shishka||Date: 5/16/03 3:57 a.m.|
Ha ha! I got to it first!
The fanfest was a blazing success. And by blazing, I mean ninja's on fire.
I'm gonna keep it short, because I wanna put the pictures I've taken in and make a full size article for you all. However, keep in mind. Short is a relative term.
The first thing that happened was Alta, the Bungie Princess, led the group I was with through the roped off E3 expo floor, straight to the Halo 2 theater, where Jaime demonstrated Halo 2 for us again. Keep in mind, this is a live, realtime demo, only the cutscenes at the beginning and end are fully scripted. Simply put, what I saw then was a bit different from what I saw yesterday, which was slightly different from the stuff you guys have downloaded from the Microsoft press conference. After the demo, we were given a gift bag, with a magazine, a load of stickers, and a miniature Master Chief. There are only 250 of these little guys in existance. Fanfesters have 200 of them, I assume the other 50 go to Bungie.
After that, I went and did a bit of mingling. I met up with Miguel, who introduced me to CYBRFRK, who introduced me to Louis Wu. I also met up with Cunbelin, R.G., and several others that you've met around here.
During the mingling, a Halo documentary played, along with the entire Red vs Blue collection, including the seventh episode (comedy gold!), which I believe hasn't been posted online yet.
After that, questions from online and by fanfest attendants were answered (well, most of them) to the best of Bungie's ability. Don't expect to hear any straight-forward answers about Halo 2.
After that, we got to see the 3 videos made by the finalists for the Biggest Halo Fan contest. The winner was the Red vs Blue public service announcement. The other two were definitely good, though. I'm sure you'll see them soon enough.
Next, came the Bungie trivia contest. An impressive amount of fan knowledge was displayed, but in the end there could be only one.
Jen Taylor, the voice talent behind Cortana, read the questions for the Q&A session, then after that went in front of the theater and signed autographs. I must say, she rocks. She's very cool.
After that, Jaime told me he was showing an "alternate" showing of the Halo 2 demo. What this meant basically was that instead of going straight through the demo as he had been doing for the last two days, he fooled around a little. For example, he threw a grenade into the medic tent you pass by early in the game. He also shot the helmet off of a marine medic. He manned a gun turret, and started firing at a civilian car, which exploded. Then, he continued to fire, and rolled the wreckage of the car down the street a ways. He spent some time basically shooting the hell out of things, he also went up to read close to the signs so we could read the words on them. At the scene where you cut off the wraith in the warthog, and shoot it with the grenade launcher, he continually shot it with the grenade launcher, and the constant impacts combined with the original forward motion of the wraith essentially kept it up in the air until he was done shooting it. He also shot at the other warthog. It appeared to be invincible. Warthog jumping may in fact live on. However, and I was given direct command by Jaime himself, I am supposed to tell you this part of the demo. After he stole the ghost (by the way, yes, you push a button to jump onto a vehicle, and until you push something else, you'll just hang out on the front of the vehicle. The Brute turned the ghost around, and slowed it down, presumabely to give the other nearby brutes a chance to attack you), he got out, which confused the AI (which expects you to fight a little, and then run off to complete the scene), and went to the other brute controlled ghost, which was just floating there. There, he shot the wings off the sides.
One more time.
You can cause damage to vehicles.
The night ended with a prize raffle, a lot of stuff, from shirts, to Seventh Column mugs, to the Fall of Reach and Flood books (my best friend got the only copy of FoR that was signed by Nylund himself), to XBox Live kits and currently unreleased colored XBox controllers.
This, of course, is leaving out the fact that Halo PC was being played at its E3 booth, and many of the XBox booths had been converted to playing Halo. There was a lot of Halo going on. The people on Halo PC got to try the new levels, the warthog with a grenade launcher, and Banshee's in multiplayer. The others had good ole classic Halo multiplayer, with really nice plasma screens. Indeed, it was a night to remember for us all.
I'm gonna close it up now, but I'll answer any questions to the best of my ability, but expect more in depth news from myself and other fanfest attendants in the near future.
