In Response To: Come in Number 7, Your Time is Up. (Matt) ;) Matt Soell was, is, and I'm sure always will be one hell of a guy. Anyone who's been in the Bungie community for as long as I have (1997 - present) can't help but love him. It hasn't always been like this: big forum, lots of Bungie community team members posting, existence of a Bungie community team in the first place... Back then it was just us, and whatever we heard from Matt. "Whatever we heard from Matt" wasn't much; Bungie information was pretty tightly-controlled in those days. But the upshot was that when we did get information, it came directly from Matt, lovingly gift-wrapped in his inimitable wit. I still remember being in the B.org IRC channel back in early '99, when Matt came in. He came in there from time to time, and as always, Hamish Sinclair immediately began hitting him up for information, shoving the figurative microphone in his face while shouting "SO WHAT'S AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HOLE, MATT?". I wish I had that transcript. At the time, all we knew was that Bungie had some big new "thing" in development, and we wanted to know all about it. Matt pulled a bunch of information out of his ass; something about Balor from Myth, a hole to the center of the Earth, and the deep dark oil fields of Texas. We all felt honored to be receiving this most heavily-guarded, top-secret information about Bungie's new "thing", which turned out to be Halo. First Doug Zartman left, then Alex Seropian, and now Matt Soell... the Old Guard is going by the wayside. I'm glad you're proud of what Bungie has accomplished in your time, Matt, because you should be, as should everyone else at Bungie. Though I expect Bungie will accomplish even more in the years to come, things over there just aren't going to be the same without you, and things over here certainly aren't. You're one of the main reasons I became a Bungie fan, Matt. I'm going to miss you, but I wish you all the best in your new endeavors. Don't be a stranger. -Nij |
