Hmmm, let's look at Bungie's track record:

Marathon ... awesome!!!
Marathon 2 ... Same magic? Yup, it just wasn't new. (I thought the netmaps in Marathon 2 were better and the Infinity netmaps were astounding.)

Myth ... awesome!!!
Myth II ... Same Magic? Yup, it just wasn't new. (In fact I prefer playing Myth II to TFL.)

Matt Soell ... awesome!!!
Matt Soell 2.0 ... Same magic? No, it's obvious he's just a Perl script now.

Well, two out of three ain't bad.

So if you discount the newness factor I'd say yes Halo 2 will be just as cool as the original.
