Okay, I decided to play with this a little.

The checkpoint is actually well before you get in the bridge - it's in the hallway you find the pistol ammo in first. Trigger that checkpoint and turn around, you'll find yourself warped to the bridge, talking to Keyes.

I managed to turn around RIGHT AT the checkpoint... triggering it while I was still in the outside hallway (where the grunts usually are) - but the door to the cafeteria was still locked. (I've got video of that, just have to cut it down.)

More details on how you managed to avoid that checkpoint but STILL open the door would be helpful. :)
