Actually, it looks like a case of 'physics works perfectly fine, just not what was intended'. When you sprint immediately after throwing the grenade, I think you are still holding the grenade for a split second. Since sprint (I presume) grants you a certain velocity nearly instantaneously, the grenade also winds up having that additional velocity as it leaves your hand, in addition to the velocity from the throwing of the grenade itself.
