Because if it's the tone and : frequency of the Promethean speech than is it possible that we've missed : some glyphs? Frequencies, yeah. They're basically 2 dimensional (unless you count brightness a 3rd dimension) representations of amplitudes of specific frequencies. Imagine watching a waveform - for each moment in time, you see the 'wave' of amplitude from low to high frequency. Instead, convert the wave to a colour scale from say low/dark to high/light. Each 'moment' you can create a line of pixels of varying brightness. Spectrogram is just that linear stream representation of line/moments in pixel form. The nice thing is the algorithms for depicting that audio-as-image trick can vary enormously, both by the input audio and the translation to output visuals. Very dynamic. And with high quality audio, you can hide a whole lot of content in small frequency ranges :) As for the sound of it all, a typical image as audio won't sound like anything .. pleasing. And likewise, anything visually audibly meaningful won't really convert to a meaningful image (unless you love abstract art :) More often, spectrograms could be hidden in frequencies that are outside the range of a normal audio track, or extremely quick, or very drawn out (sounds more ambient, easier to blend in), or overlayed like a watermark that could be picked out visually, etc... many ways to hide/incorporate spectrograms into audio that aren't as obtrusive or obvious. Cool implementation - Nine Inch Nails' ARG Year Zero made heavy use of spectrograms in their productions. check it out
