: Haha, well, I'm a beginner, what would I know. If there're things that need
: improvement and people point them out to me, it seems stupid to not accept
: that. Like refusing offers of money or something, heh. I'll definitely
: have a look for that rig, weight shifting was the biggest struggle for me
: in that assignment, to the point I tried avoiding having him turn around
: if I could. My teacher worked on Happy Feet 2 as a previs animator so he
: had to learn very quickly how to deal with criticism -- apparently George
: Miller knows what he wants. :P

: I live in Australia -- I'm assuming you're not -- so I'm not sure if you'll
: have heard of the place, but it's called the Academy of Interactive
: Entertainment (mostly gets called the AIE). It's a brilliant college
: though, tachers definitely know what they're doing, got people who have
: worked on LA Noire, Happy Feet 1 and 2, Mad Max, Pixar films... I was
: almost starstruck when I joined, haha. They're definitely not afraid to
: speak their mind... sometimes it feels like they're too harsh, haha. The
: ex-Pixar guy absolutely ripped into this animation the other day.

Oooh, Australia. I was assuming you were in North America. But, nah, I hadn't heard of it (but I can't name ANY Australian schools offhand so that doesn't mean anything). I'm not sure if the situation in Australia is the same as in North America but, here, there are maybe 4 really good animation schools in the entire continent. My school has the same deal, with animators from Pixar and Dreamworks and ILM and stuff and, boy, are they ruthless. I know exactly what you mean. To be an animator in this industry, you've gotta swallow your pride every day. The thing to remember is that it's always for your benefit. The guy who did The Last Lecture, Randy Pausch, said that your critics are the ones always telling you they love you. Because once people stop criticizing you, you know that they've given up on you. That's really important wisdom to remember as an artist.

I just gotta say again how impressed I am at you being a beginner. You've definitely got the natural talent. I wish I'd been as good as you when I was first starting. But also keep in mind that talent only gets you so far and, especially in this field, its your drive and your passion that will make you great. Man, I've spent upwards of 60 hours a week on assignments from AM. Drive is IMPORTANT. But from the way you take criticism, it looks like you're totally eager to get better, so I'd bet that you have that drive. Don't ever lose it.
