High level: for natural environments : it's an obvious improvement. Otherwise, not so much, perhaps because there : are more aesthetic choices to be made in regards to lighting, textures, : and so on. Some of these shots show why people initially said it looked more like a mod than a retail product. With some of the popular moddable FPS on the PC, fans will create high-res texture packs and new skins for enemies, but more often than not, instead of improving the visuals they just make them more complicated. It's a running joke that many novice high res texture packs are just the original textures with a noise filter applied. The organic scenery looks nice, but some of the forerunner changes are entirely too "busy" for me. It's as if the mandate was not "make these look better" but "make these complex as hell". The floor textures are perfect examples of this. The original floors were low res and a little bland, but hey, they're a floor. You walk on them. In the remastered edition, they appear to have been designed by a manic depressive in an extreme manic phase while hopped up on amphetamines. They're distracting. To be fair, even the organic screens screens are more distracting, but since I really can't complain about having better looking trees and sand, I'll give them a pass. When Halo CE first came out, Cliff Blesinski commented that one of Halo's strengths was "clarity of experience", saying that enemies looked like "grape candy against contrasting backgrounds". In other words, you knew what you were supposed to be looking at, and the enemies were easy to track. Some of the "improved" environments are so cluttered for no apparent reason that they may actually make the game harder (and less enjoyable) to play. It's like every part of the screen is competing for your attention and is screaming for you to look at it.
