In Response To: Weaponized Transhumans: Halo, Deus Ex, Crysis... (General Battuta)

Thanks for writing this! I find it very timely, especially considering the United States' increasing use of UAVs and the moral issues behind that. I recently read a piece by Eugene Robinson about them, so it's been on my mind already. He's not writing about Transhumanism specifically, but the moral issues behind letting machines do all our fighting. I won't post it here, since it's potentially too political, but I can e-mail you if you like.

I've played Bioshock, Halo, and Crysis 2 (yes, I know, no Deus Ex, BURN THE HERETIC). Crysis 2 was the first game to make me clearly think about this topic, and it's interesting to see how it's expressed in other games. Your conclusions are spot on, especially with Halo. Now, I'm wondering what you think of Half-Life and Mass Effect in relation to this discussion.

Of the games you've already mentioned, which ones are they the most like in their view of Transhumanism? Or, are they trying to say something different?

In Half-Life, Gordon Freeman represents a very instinctual brand of humanity. He's more of a cornered animal than anything else. Of course, he's being manipulated by the Gman in order to fight the Combine. System vs. System, again. Half-Life seems to be positive about the role of humanity, but underneath the Gman makes it all very cynical - Freeman's instincts are simply useful to Gman.

Thanks to Cerberus, Commander Shepard is now literally Transhuman, failing a better definition of what exactly 'bio-synthetic fusion' was. Yet, here he is fighting the Reapers, who in their view represent the pinnacle of evolution. What do you think of this, especially in regards to the idea that consciousness is an evolutionary dead end? If you become as powerful as the Reapers, do you still have a responsibility to those that are not, or do you get to do what you please with lesser creatures?
