I should've replied to this instead, so I will now: Cortana talked to him by name in the second level, there are more scripted lines for his voice than any other except Cortana, the Chief, probably Keyes, and maybe Foehammer, and I remember someone from Bungie saying that they didn't show him surviving in the first game because they thought it would be disingenuous to his character or something, the quote escapes me but I know it was said.
