Re: My Comprehensive-ish Argument With Narcogen

: What makes this patently absurd is your insistence that a model of the PoA is
: just a representation, with no details that can be derived from it. A
: model or a picture of something in a story is used because that is what
: the object is supposed to be. That's what the readers or players are
: supposed to latch onto and say "Yeah, that's the Pillar of
: Autumn" or "That's the X-Wing".

This is, I think, an extremely good practical and intuitive articulation of that objection.

People get connected to particular imagery, and building off and using those connections is both more powerful for some and more comfortable for others, as compared to change for change's sake. Rebuilding the models to sit well with a newer engine seems reasonable and stylistically necessary, but completely redesigning them in the process just seems silly and, in the case of how Reach does it, completely counterproductive toward the entire point of referencing older materials to tap into nostalgia.

(Though part of my irkage might just be from the fact that I think Reach's redesignings of HCE materials look awful compared to the originals.)
