Re: Why retcons do bother me.

: I was introduced to Halo in 2003. At that time, I had never heard of Bungie
: before as a company, nor was Halo just a game. Bungie was a Microsoft
: subsidiary. At that time, there existed 3 novels and a video game. That
: was my introduction. To my knowledge (and this is before your oft-quoted
: Staten delineation), the novels and game were on par with one another, so
: I never had the games are #1 only intro you had.

: Maybe that fact has allowed you to see the reason for my stance better.
: Anyway, that's how I think of it. Halo's always been a multi-media
: franchise/universe. The games carry a lot of weight, but I don't see the
: same tiers of canon you do, despite what Staten said.

That makes a lot of sense. I think it's natural that people are heavily influenced by the manner in which they are first introduced to something they come to like; why people tend to like the originals of films over the remakes if they liked the original, and other similar situations.

For me, the MacWorld 1999 video was the real introduction to Halo: the first glimpse of what Halo would turn out to be. I was a fan of Myth and Marathon; Bungie was the game company that made games for the computer I owned (a Mac) and that alone gave them a special place in the hearts of a lot of people. So I was interested because I knew Bungie was a company that wove themes into their games that I liked, and even just the prospect of a Marathon-like game with updated production value was of interest, since I really loved Marathon.

: Because now, regardless of what he said, 343i is the shepherd of that
: universe and they will do as they will with what's canon and what's not.
: They are not necessarily bound by the same hierarchy and for that I'm
: glad. And we've seen in their solo forays already that they are not
: discounting novel information, but rather embracing it.

Ironically I think choosing that path will make maintaining future continuity more, rather than less, difficult. For me, the story of Halo as told by Bungie is largely over. I think I'd be open to a presentation that there's more to be told that justifies another game purchase, but I haven't seen anything like that yet. Still waiting. The secondary materials aren't of interest to me in and of themselves-- only to the degree that the illuminate what is done in the games, and it's apparently yet to be determined if there will be another game, who will make it, and what it will be about. Until then it's hard for me to comment on 343i's treatment of canon.
