Well... in part that's exactly what I'm saying. MS/343i didn't create the setting. They've inherited-- or rather purchased it-- and are now, presumably, looking to see what can be done with it. It's the nature of licensing. If it were never a legitimate creative activity to engage in, there would be no licensed properties and hardly any sequels. Setting, plot and theme are not elements you can list in a linear fashion and say that the way to proceed in making a good story is to have one, then move to the other, then move to the next. Plots especially all tend to reduce to a list of archetypical constructions, and many settings are nothing more than mix-and-match combinations of real environments. I don't think it's possible to say that a creative process that starts with one and moves towards the other is more or less legitimate than one than does the opposite. : That seems to be the correct and sensible conclusion, but 343 might have : better writers on their team this time around, or people who actually : understand when to use and when not to use a silent or faceless : protagonist. I tend to think there's a point of diminishing returns when it comes to pure craft. What you're suggesting is that a group of individuals steeped in an understanding of technique will produce a superior work based on a licensed property than a group of individuals who (in your view) lack such a background, but who are the originators of the setting, characters, and plot. : The way they can do that is by creating a new important central character : we'd care about, and give them a new arc. True, but you don't need the Haloverse to do that, do you?
