Re: Why retcons don't bother me anymore

: Unless he's shifted positions from Bungie to 343i, I don't see why.

: Pedantics aside though, he's right. While continuity does matter and nitpicks
: will happen, arguing about it amongst ourselves isn't going to change
: anything or make anyone any happier.

: Its also kind of a waste of time crafting an incredible universe and story if
: the game isn't fun to play. That's reality, and that's where compromise
: will come in.
: The Flood are key from a story perspective, but thinking about EO's post and
: playing the games, I fully agree that they always felt like a chore. When
: people are asked, Flood centric levels usually come back as the least
: favourite.
: Then ODST and Reach came along which had no requirement for a Flood
: component. You know what, I've probably had the most fun playing the ODST
: and Reach campaigns.
: Maybe they were a little lacking in the 'grand space opera' style story, but
: I can't say I played them thinking "This isn't as good as H1, 2 or
: 3."

This presupposes that gameplay is a primary ingredient for everyone. To me I could care less. I'm into Halo for the story and for the fictional universe that was crafted. The Flood novel holds an equal standing in my eye as the first Halo game. No need for them to be at odds.

My first experience of Halo 2 was watching a friend play through the campaign. I just sat and watched. It looked fun but the thrill of playing it was totally secondary to me compared the experiencing the story unfold. He offered me the controller a few times, but I just let him play and I watched the story unfold.

Halo may have started with a game and a novel mostly concurrently but it's a huge property now in many media. Gameplay is not primary and to me the game doesn't trump other sources of official info in the same universe. As long as that viewpoint is allowed, retcons will continue to happen and people will be OK with instigating inconsistencies.
