: Obi Wan said 'Darth Vader betrayed and murdered your father' (and meant : exactly that). Empire altered that. It's a retcon. What he said was quite clear. His meaning, however, was not something set in stone by the narratve; he did not, for example, show any video proof of the murder which was subsequently slid under the rug. Nothing about the explanation given in Empire actually contradicts what was said in ANH; it simply offers a new interpretation. I don't think that qualifies as a retcon; information from outside the text is required to conclude that the meaning was actually altered post facto.
