Are those really retcons?

The Star Wars examples don't work for me. They're not retcons because they don't change anything except the author's original intent. They're simply reinterpretations of things left ambiguous. Had Empire contained a flashback to ANH in which Obi-Wan said "Vader overcame your father", actually altering material already given to the audience, I'd buy that as a retcon. I buy the Ren and Stimpy stuff too (inasmuch as there is con to ret.) But a retcon is, I think, changing something substantially and pretending it simply was that way before. That said, I agree with your point. Reach's narrative failed for reasons internal to Reach. The retcons never really bothered me.
