: Is it possible that some of these colonies are not on naturally habitable : worlds, but are just enclosed habitats? Might make up for that obscene : number. Beta Gabriel's a hunting preserve (as seen in Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss), Tribute's a cold industrial planet (the opening to Contact Harvest takes place here), and Reach obviously is also completely habitable. We only know Circumstance is famous for its universities and courts of justice, but nothing that indicates this is a completely terraformed planet and not a habitat. The same goes for Tantalus, of which we only know that the ships in its orbit were present during the Battle of Reach. Preston Cole served on a planet called 'Epsilon Eridani IV', but this could just as well be one of the planets listed above.
