Mendicant Bias: The New Cortana
Posted By: DHalo <dhalo117@yahoo.com>Date: 6/27/10 12:33 a.m.

Ok, I just took a look at some older material from the IRIS campaign and I'm formed a bit of a theory I'd like to share with you all. Keep in mind it is still just a theory and I could be totally off base here, but I really think I have something. If you're already fully aware of who Mendicant Bias is, skip ahead to "Hitchhikers May Be Escaping Convicts."

This Is How It All Began

First, we'll take a look at the focus of this theory: Mendicant Bias. Mendicant Bias, or as I'll refer to him from now on, MB, was first revealed to us unknowingly during the IRIS pre-Halo 3 Alternate Reality Game. During this ARG, a cataloging Forerunner AI of sorts (named AdjutantReflex) was scouring the Halo communities, even our own HBO for some time (until of course the bandwidth choked and died, at which point HBO no longer was a focal point for the story). Eventually he was overtaken by an "older life." We knew not his identity, or his intent, but he told us to focus on the latter, not so much the former. Though we did later discover both his identity and intent, the journey that we were taken on was honestly quite unforgettable. (at least for me)

For a more thorough synopsis, I recommend the Perceiving the Dimensions of IRIS video series Ibeechu and I created. You can find links to it here.

Identity and Intent

Mendicant Bias was this "older life," and his identity and intent were fully revealed to us through the Terminals in Halo 3. The end of the IRIS campaign pointed us to the Terminals before launch, so the connection was made clear early on. Also, during the campaign, this "older life" was referred to as MB05032, and this was relayed in the Terminals to refer to MB, and so his identity was revealed.

The Terminals explained to us that he was an AI created by the Forerunners in their time of desperate need as a final hope of saving the galaxy from the Flood: the penultimate plan. He was created to be entirely sentient, capable of free will. After a series of events and deceptions put forth by the Gravemind, MB turned to the Flood's side, and attempted to wipe the Forerunners out, forcing the hand of the Forerunners to the galaxy's kill switch. And thus, MB reveals on the level "Halo" on Legendary that he wishes to atone for his sins, and you, the Master Chief, shall be his example.

Hitchhikers May Be Escaping Convicts

And so we were introduced to a pivotal character in the history of this universe. I, however, believe he is to become much more important than he already is.

This is the symbol of Mendicant Bias.

It was the logo used by him during IRIS. It is seen again here...

...in Cortana's eye, in "Origins: Part 2"

This is obviously no coincidence. This little easter egg was planted quite purposefully. Ever since I saw it, I have had the feeling that Mendicant Bias was hitching a ride with Cortana. Some people have speculated before me that MB was the true reason the Chief ended up floating to some Forerunner branded planet, an example to prove that MB had finally realized his mistake.

Let us for a moment just venture into one particular hypothetical example scenario for a future Halo installment of any kind that continues the Chief's story. Let's assume that the Chief is on this planet because of MB. Let's also assume that Forerunner actually inhabit this planet. How would MB be able to show the Forerunners that he sent the Chief there and helped him destroy the Flood? By being there, of course!

Another point about the possible necessity of a new AI. I was speaking with Ibeechu on the topic, and he personally felt that for the series to go on, Cortana had to go. I somewhat agree. The Chief and Cortana story arc is over. For a new story arc to begin, that dynamic needs to change. (all opinions still, of course)

A Pulse

Another small, potential piece of evidence is the following cryptic message left by MB early in Iris' campaign.

"A pulse.
Can you feel it?
Beating at the heart of the Universe.
Skin too thick to be sure.
It's alive though.
I'm certain.
What do I do with life?"

This could potentially be a small poetic piece written during MB's time in Cortana while the Chief slept in Cryo.

Closing Thoughts

This theory is quite a reach (heh), especially given that there isn't too much evidence backing it. However, I'm confident that all of this means SOMETHING significant, whatever it may be. Feel free to chime in below.
