Re: Thoughts on Reach (4K words)

: Notice how in Halo, the plot is steadily advancing all throughout the game?
: Now notice in Reach, how only the very beginning, and the very end of the
: game move the story forward at all?

Disagree here.

The main theme in Reach is futility. So like the Pelican mission- everything you do on that mission is entirely futile. Even if you get these people into Orbit, the Covenant's just going to use their ship's hull to help decorate the atmosphere.

But that's the point. You're making this stand, even knowing you've already failed, because it's just something you have to do. The orders really don't make any sense, and it really is just a series of "go here do this" missions. But that's all Noble 6's life is at that point, scrabbling for survival and following orders along the way. I think that's actaully pretty powerful.

I remember a similar argument in Halo 1, when people were complaining that the Flood were just yucky zombies and weren't fun to fight. They're not supposed to be clasically fun to fight like the Covenant, they're not supposed to involve your aesthetic pleasure like the semiorganic forms of Covenant tech, the Flood is supposed to impress upon you how important it is keep the rest of the galaxy safe from them. (although this wore off entirely for H2/H3- the Flood wound up being drab, poorly designed, and downright annoying instead of icky / terrifying). In being nasty and terrifying and you bastards aren't leaving this rock, Halo 1's Flood was an amazing enemy.

That still doesn't excuse the missions in Reach that really don't advance anything, like the mentioned communications tower... thing... deals. It's really just a callback to Halo and Foehammer picking up Marines, which I can enjoy as a fan, but objectively I see how it doesn't really do anything.
