In Response To: Re: Who owns the game engine? (Cody Miller)

: No, as far as I know they Myth engine was fully 3D. The landscape and
: structures were rendered in fully 3D space. Only the units were sprite
: based.

The units were sprites, yes, but I'm not sure everything else was true 3D.

: Marathon was 2.5D because it 'cheated' a lot, and the game world wasn't
: rendered in true 3D. No rooms over rooms, and looking up and down was
: accomplished by distorting the geometry.

My recollection is not clear here. I do think there are things the Myth engine could do that the Marathon one could not, but neither am I certain that the Myth engine could do everything we consider "3d" with respect to geometry.

Marathon's map was entirely 2D, with no actual overlaps. All overlaps were actually an illusion.

There are some Myth levels that have objects that look like bridges but are actually solid polygons, with a "view" under the bridge rendered onto the surface. It's a similar trick to what was used in Marathon.

What I don't remember for sure is whether or not Myth has any bridges that are NOT created with this trick. I think if there are any that aren't like that, it's probably on Five Champions. Not sure. However I tend to think even those were illusions.

Ferrex would probably know.

For fun, make a physics file in
: Anvil that lets you look up higher than you otherwise could, and you'll
: see what it's doing.

: So even though both used sprite for the units, Myth placed them in 100% 3D
: space.

Do I hear 90%?
