The trouble with your 'simple and to the point' is that in this case it's also 'potentially misleading with annoying consequences'. I know you've got SAVE AND QUIT above, making it implicit that QUIT will entail no saving, but the point is, some people will see QUIT and hit it without necessarily reading that other option and realizing the implications. Also there could be other people who know the implications, but they see QUIT and instinctively hit it anyway (because it seems to fit what they want to do), before they remember about the consequences. QUIT WITHOUT SAVING is extra words sure, but surely not confusing. On the contrary, it just seems crystal clear. But even if seen as confusing, you'd still have to weigh that against the destructive danger of QUIT. If there indeed are any Xbox UI guidelines, I guess it's entirely possible they might nevertheless recommend the shorter titling for some reason. All I can say there is that if they did, they'd be going against the norms of safe design for computer programs - which is the angle I was coming from. Apple's guidelines I'm actually relatively familiar with. Part of the ethos is to avoid leading the user into an unexpectedly destructive action, as I guess you know - so I'm surprised you're sticking to your guns on the QUIT phrasing. One thing I do agree with you on is Apple not following their own guidelines. With the advent of OSX they seemed to discard a lot of the intelligence previously enshrined in their guidelines; or at any rate they became inconsistent. I've lost a lot of respect for them over that, but yeah, a bit OT.
