In Response To: SHISHKA, OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN (Miguel Chavez)

: Brother, I love you man. Like bear-claw wuv you. Any old fart that can play
: the piano every bother you, ever , again, I'm all over him like white on
: rice. Hear me out, hear me out, HEAR ME OUT, I'll let you put the tip of
: your Nordic wang past my cuspids. WHATEVER YOU WANT.

: Just do me this one favor. Please. Submit it to the tech folks in charge,
: hang little yellow post-its, scrub it in poop in the bathrooms,
: *ANYTHING*. "We've come FULL-CIRCLE w/ the Halo franchise, we're
: revisiting things, we're going to go out w/ a bang." ET CETERA ET
: CETERA ET CETERA. OKAY. I HEAR YOU! LOUD AND CLEAR. NOW CAN YOU HEAR ME??
: ADD this feature and I'll buy TWO COPIES on launch day, just to prove that
: it helped increase sales by UNIT-ONE: ************************
: When the user presses the start button during solo gameplay, the pop-up menu
: currently presents with these options: CONTINUE
: REVERT TO LAST CHECKPOINT
: RESTART LEVEL
: CONTROLLER SETTINGS
: SAVE AND QUIT

: Please add "QUIT" to this menu. This will prevent the auto-saved
: checkpoint from being moved from temporary drive space to permanent
: profile checkpoint-save space and drop the player back to the main menu.
: The last 'saved' checkpoint is preserved, regardless of how far back it
: was initially achieved.

: TO BE CLEAR: Gaming starts. Assume initial start is CHECKPOINT A. This is the
: initial "SAVED CHECKPOINT" that is tied to the user's profile.
: If he were to turn the xbox off and on at this point, this C-A is where he
: would start.

: Now during the course of gameplay, player hits CHECKPOINT B and CHECKPOINT C.
: These are currently in the 'temporary space' set aside on the drive. If
: the player were to NOW turn off the xbox (power-off, quit to dashboard,
: etc.) and restart the game, it would have FORGOTTEN C-B and C-C. Why?
: Because these were not 'permanently' assigned to the user's profile.

: If the player actually dies in gameplay at this point, it will act as it
: normally has done over the course of 4 Halo games: it will revert to the
: LAST checkpoint, regardless of permanent or temp status.

: HOWEVER the new behavior is that if the player has chosen to just *quit* the
: game gracefully through the start-menu, the checkpoints set in temp-space
: are forever discarded. Similar to the actions described above when the
: Xbox is forcefully turned-off, but made into less of a kludge and an
: actual function of the start-menu.

: REASON: In order to increase playability and game longevity, players can
: 'hold unto' a particular checkpoint, continue to explore and have fun, and
: not worry about overwriting the checkpoint so it can be visited again at a
: later time. This would satisfy the portion of players that value deep
: exploration in campaign mode and attempts at setting up 'perfect
: scenarios' of their own design. "How many warthogs can I hoard into
: this one spot? How far away can I blast this turret? How far along can I
: take these 12 rocket-wearing marines deep into Covenant territory?"
: These questions can all be visited over and over and over again with ease
: if the option to not save a checkpoint upon quitting is allowed. I hope my
: attempt at explaining the mechanics of how this is done currently and the
: modifications needed are sufficient to demonstrate that it is not a
: tremendous code change and minimally impacts development timetables and
: scope. Also your mother said it was alright with her.
: ***********************************

Why not simply provide an option to retain a separate save for the last checkpoint? Maybe only give us one that will overwrite each time it's used, but make it an official option? Really, why ask for another back door option, when what you want is a good old fashioned loadable save?

Honestly, I wish there was a way I could go back past my autosaves in Mass Effect, maybe like copying one on to a memory card and hard-quitting every game I play... Oh wait, what's this save thingy in the pause menu?

I understand that there is a different philosophy in Halo than using a save option, and I don't mind it, but honestly, it sounds like everyone is asking for a ridiculously annoying and complicated version of a simple save option. Is there really no compromise that doesn't involve cheating the checkpoint system in a very unintuitive way, that could please players and Bungie?
