: You guys are disregarding so many story elements presented in the campaign.
: The search for Cortana is present throughout the game, the scene during
: floodgate, the scene in High Charity where Chief finds her, and the
: post-credits scene were very compelling elements in the narrative that
: went beyond shooting stuff.

: And you're also disregarding the gravemind's role in the actual game. Based
: on the story presented in the terminals, people credit it as a malevolent
: force that can manipulate and seduce beings to do its bidding. But I think
: this characterization was present in the actual game as well, I imagine it
: was always a temptation placed before Chief to "join his voice with
: the timeless chorus, and sing VICTORY everlasting" as the thing John
: had always wanted was to figure out was a way to "win."
: Gravemind's satanic presence during the Cortana level was also an awesome
: addition that made it feel like the Chief, despite being only human, was
: really an unwavering force that would not be swayed, even by the devil.

: And to those that say the Arbiter's story was discarded, I completely
: disagree. His character arc had him reclaim the honor he had lost at the
: end of Halo 2 when he rallied the elites and became their leader. And
: there was a REASON why it was the Arbiter who killed Truth, providing an
: awesome end to the portion of his story that started the moment he said:
: "Tartarus, the Prophets have betrayed us."

I can dig the Full-Circle post credits scene. That was a nice touch.

The Cortana level, and the rest of the game, pissed me off through the use of the Cortana/Gravemind "Flashes." They interrupted the gameplay and were far too invasive. Not to mention unclear on whether it was John growing an imagination or some kind of ghost in the machine effect. They could have had Cortana hijack Truth's broadcast podiums from time to time, rather than make me walk slow.

(Also, the laziness - if that's the word for it - involved in not actually slowing time, just the walking speed, really annoys me.)

For the Gravemind temptation idea, I didn't feel it. I always thought John's motivation was "I don't wanna get ate."

The Arbiter's story also fell flat for me constantly. I just could not get invested in the moral trials of an alien whom I would have shot without question eight years ago. I have to steal back my Halo 1 disc and play it until it breaks.
