The main reason is that a spike grenade is much safer when you're tagging an enemy close up. But yes I do occasionally tag a wall or something, to try to get enemies with the spike spray (e.g. when they're hiding). But functionality isn't the only relevant thing anyway. When I hear people saying the battle rifle is basically the same as the old H1 pistol for example, I have to disagree. They may have similar capabilities but the BR has that three-round burst, making it feel quite different to me; and when I use the pistol, I also just feel different with it due to how it's carried. I mean, it's a pistol not a rifle. Ok that's all just asthetics you could say, but that's an important part of the experience after all. The spike grenade has different aesthetics to the plasma grenade, and it's also nicely in line with the Brute style of weaponry - which I think I once heard described as 'industrial'. The sticking sound it makes is enjoyable too. So even if it's functionally similar, it still has its own character. On that basis I wouldn't think it fair to drop it. On the other hand I'm also in the same camp as Scarab. Cycling through four different types of grenade in the heat of battle is not what I want, and because of this I sometimes end up throwing the wrong type by mistake, or I give up even trying to select, and just throw whatever - which ain't always beneficial! Also, when I have to think about cycling, it takes me out of the battle somewhat; I'm losing immersion. So although the spike grenade and fire grenade are each enjoyable to use, on balance I'd prefer if we still had only two types. For me, fluency of combat should come first. Course, some folk may be lot better at grenade-cycling, so they might not mind it so much.
