The range that the spikes could do damage to a person are typically the same that a plasma grenade could damage a person without sticking them. On occasion, a spike grenade will kill someone from quite a few feet away, but at this point, it is typically due to chance; It takes several seconds for a spike grenade to go off, and it is very difficult to time something like that when the enemy could easily move in several different directions, especially when you are far more likely to get the kill by just sticking your opponent. I could be wrong though.
