Or other way around perhaps. With a : row of lines, they can be decoded and see what's there. Maybe? : -Hedge. Depends on the decoder...not all barcodes are universal. I recall a time I worked in a hardware store and scanning a can of 7Up (which we didn't sell) still came up on the computer as a valid product. It was a light fixture of all things.
