In Response To: Gender and War discussion, possibly? (SonofMacPhisto) : Well, IF Bungie is trying to say something about gender and war, yes. I : remember hearing a discussion about including a 'female death scream' into : Halo, and how jarring some people found that. : But hey, we all want to be '21st Century' and have women in the military...
I don't think Bungie was trying to make any kind of statement, or open any discussion, with the "female death scream." They wanted women to have the option to play as a spartan who wasn't patently male. People hear men crying in pain a lot in the movies, but aren't as used to hearing women do so. Sure, it's a comment on our history and society, but I don't think Bungie was addressing that, and I don't think their decision on the gender of the Rookie (if they make one - could be it stays ambiguous or is optional like MP spartans) will be made with a greater statement in mind.
