It was given their stamp of approval when it was first : introduced (or at any rate wasn't stopped and nixed before publication of : First Strike) so why the desire to change it. Well disagreeing with one of the people responsible for the Halo story itself about something they were a big part of creating probably isn't a good idea. :P To put it simply, I think its an sign that in the earlier novels especially, the writers still had a good amount of freedom to come up with their own ideas and theories, combined with Bungie not following every detail of the novels development itself. Basically, there doesn't seem to be much indication that Bungie went through the earlier novels with a fine tooth comb to make sure everything was kosher before they hit the shelves, a big part of why I no longer trust them without question. Ghosts of Onyx seemed to be the first time Bungie really kept a closer eye on the development of a novel and a desire to keep it more consistent with their vision. Then they went the whole hog and had a novel written by Staten himself.
