In Response To: I wish I could quit you (Jillybean) : I'm beginning to sound like a broken record - I agree with what you said! : I'm probably even more conservative than that. : For me, the only true canon is the games. The books I'll take stuff from, but
Well, in those cases we have to make exceptions for the nature of the medium. Sarge can be killed in H1 any number of times, yet he appears in the sequels. That, to me, is not evidence of one primary source contradicting another, but is an unintended consequence of 1) the nature of the medium and 2) the shifting importance of a character (after all, I don't think even Bungie intended the "sniper sergeant" to become a pivotal character who would one day have a novel devoted to him). For me it's gradations-- the noncontradicting portions of the game are 100% canon. Noncontradicting parts of authorized first party novelizations, somewhat less. Noncontradicting portions of third party novelizations, less still. At the far end are fan fiction which are clearly noncanon except where they repeat information already verified from a primary source. Somewhere slightly up from that would be ILB. The problem I think a lot of people have is that they look upon elements of ILB that corroborate primary sources as validation of the whole, which I think is unjustifiable. Further, they look at the (relatively few) corroborations of portions of ILB (mentions of bits and pieces of the Haloverse either mentioned in ILB, or mentioned only there and nowhere else) made in other sources, like the Bungie.net website when it mentions the ship Apocalypto. What those who seek to cross-reference ILB that way fail to acknowledge is the role of the Halo Bible as a single, common, primary source to which only Bungie has access. The use of "Apocalypto" both on Bungie.net and in ILB does not mean that Bungie is confirming as canon other unrelated elements of ILB. What it more likely means is that those elements of ILB, even if they were never exposed in any other public materials, were most likely referenced in the Bible.
