I've always contended that Cortana has been at least a little rampant from the time she was put into the Halo computers in Halo 1.

She chaged colors getting angry, etc. Anger isn't a programmed state for an AI. It's one thing to approximate emotions and feelings using subroutines, it's another thing to actually experience them.

The same thing goes for concepts of friendship etc, and ANY concept of going insane while being held by Gravemind. It's a sign that the programming has become too convoluted to be used properly.

In the novels she was fighting rampancy when she had all that Halo knowledge on her chip. She took a LONG time replying to questions from MC, etc. She had to replicate subroutines of herself and then delete the orginal information, etc. to stay on top of it all.

I'm vaguely surprised that Bungie didn't create a significant issue about it. That might have been a fun twist when you suddenly realized you've been straight-out betrayed by the AI you've been trusting all along.
