Well, you do that, and the entire level you use them becomes an Escort Mission - the bane of gamers everywhere. I personally would have no issue with it if they went with things the way Dawn of War does it with Force Commanders, having you only able to produce one (or one squad) and being able to replace them if you lose them. Sure, it kind of strains reality, but then again, you're cranking out tanks from factories a half a mile away from your enemies' base, your carpet bombing runs are fifty feet wide, and your Marines are closing to within fifteen feet before firing their weapons.
