I'm pretty certain you can chalk up any Spartan casualties in Halo Wars to the acceptable breaks from reality you're going to get with an RTS. I mean, in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, the Blood Ravens Space Marines' army consists of elements of three Companies of the Blood Ravens, totaling about three hundred Marines, but you can lose ten times that number in a single battle if you're a bad commander.
