At least 100 years in they could have gotten : their act together and started mass-producing sentinels. Well, that would make sense, they have this army of robot slaves, then when some super-parasite comes along, they fit them with laser beams! Well, you've convinced me on that point, the only other thing I could think of would be resources, although seeing as Onyx has been pumping them out for 100,000 years it looks like the Forerunner had some way of getting around this problem.
