: The weren't Spartan I's before the Spartan II's. They were called Spartan : II's because they were named after the original Spartans of ancient : Greece. They were the Spartan I's... it's in the novel, just read more : closely. The Spartan I's were the ones that volunteered for the ORION Project. Basically what they did was test some of the genetic enhancements that would later be performed on the Spartan II's.
