I'm familiar with the Bestiarium, but I don't think it contradicts anything Cthulhu said. The fact that there are stages only suggests the compound mind doesn't develop until sufficient numbers of minds are assimilated -- not that it must inhabit one place and one body. Cthulhu, I agree with your theory. I think that in-game evidence in Halo 3 suggests that the compound mind, Gravemind, persists even after its physical form is destroyed. Heck, we don't even know if that physical form is anything more than a mouthpiece. Killing large numbers of Flood is probably the only way to actually damage the Gravemind.
