Well, in order to 'study the Flood' as on Halo04, the Forerunners instigated some kind of preservation measure, to keep them alive in the absence of sentient food I'm not entirely sure what this could be, but the only plausible explanation for Gravemind's survival is that he tapped into this resource. It seems a bit illogical that a Gravemind could form so fast, with such little biomass available, after Halo 04 failed to do the same.
