A brief history of blue beams
Posted By: JillybeanDate: 4/4/08 8:47 a.m.

: Do we have confirmation of the purpose of the blue beams? I remember in some
: interview somewhere, a Bungie employee was speaking about the difficulty
: in getting those blue beams to play nice in the game. I thought to myself
: "Why would they go through all the trouble to keep the blue beams in
: when they were under such tight time restraints?"

That's a very good point. I've been doing a bit of research on the HSP (only a little because my internet is being very grumpy today). They were first brought up here. They were expanded upon as either a source of power or a method of communication between the rings. Other theories have included Atmosphere Control, Venting energy (and again and transferring energy), Tide Control, Stabilisation,

...

But it's not till Halo 2 starts to come out that the idea is first bandied about that the blue beams are some sort of pulse generator. This leads on to them being a failsafe which I really like. It almost ties in with the observations at the end of Halo 2 (seems so long ago now!)

This was the first time they were connected to simulation firings.

Now, as far as I can tell (and I beg one of my fellows to help me here if they can see something I can't) there's been nothing official about the blue beams. Everything we know is fanon.

: It'd make sense that they were critical to the function of the ring. I mean,
: in Halo: CE we had no clue as to how the rings fired, so perhaps they were
: meant to serve as a clue which was later confirmed in the ending cutscene
: of Halo 2.
